This is our Spay/Neuter video! We are AHA! Alliance for Humane Action!

We're very excited because we've had a huge response! Since the first of the year we've had over 80,000 hits on YouTube! We've had e-mails from all over the country and outside the country asking for DVDs of it, and Best Friends is featuring it on their website! Maybe the nicest thing is that small and large groups and individuals have written to say, "Thank you for making this video. We think it will be effective in reaching our target audience...it should be a public announcement on tv."

We would very much like that because we know that most people don't realize what happens to the millions of feral and homeless domestic animals that wind up in shelters and animal control agencies.

We believe that with education, dedication and creativity we can become a no-kill nation, and in time, a no-kill world. We also believe that to engage people we need to present the situation in a positive light.

We have affordable programs to help us get animals fixed; we just need to let people know about them. We know how to rehabilitate animals with behavioral issues, we know how to socialize feral, frightened and abused animals; we just have to install these programs into our shelters. We know how to take care of animals with diseases and other medical and behavioral conditions; we just need to care enough to give these animals special attention.

Not knowing and/or not caring just doesn't seem acceptable anymore. I feel like it's time to push forward and conquor this situation!

Cold cats

I've been hibernating for the last three weeks. It's been very cold in Chicago. Last night they said it was supposed to be -20 degrees. I didn't follow up to see whether it got that cold. I just slept late. Somebody called me the other day and woke me up, though.

"Deb, what do I do about winter feral cat shelters?"

"What!?" I said, "You don't have shelters for your cats yet?" Long story short, here are some options for winter shelters for feral cats. And please do it quick!

Some important things to keep in mind are that the opening of any cat shelter needs to be no bigger than 7" or other critters like racoons and dogs and foxes might get in and cause problems. Also, don't feed cats in their shelters because it will attract other animals as well. Move the food away a bit. It's also a good rule of thumb to feed and take away any food for ferals before nightfall to prevent the same problem.

Straw is a better insulator than blankets or other fabric because it will dry rather than freeze after getting wet. Pressure-activated heating pads are nice because they don't warm until somebody sits on them, but are often not an option because they are electric. Snuggle Safe microwaveable heating discs are good for several hours, just be sure you check the shelter for animals before you reach your hand in there to put in or take out a disc!
